HELPING YOUR STUDENTS WITH MATH

Investigations in Number, Data, and Space

What do I need to know?

What is Investigations?

Investigations in Number, Data, and Space is a comprehensive K-5 mathematics curriculum which is aligned with the California State Standards for Math. The program utilizes group work, discussion, games, and real-life problems to engage students while they foster a deep understanding of why math works and develop strategies for tackling problems through reasoning and perseverance.

How can I support my child in math?

  •  Read the Family Letters- Each unit will have at least one family letter which explains the Mathematics in the unit. Please read these letters so that you have a clear picture of the math that your child is exploring in class.
  • Try the Related Activities- Each unit will have at least one family letter which suggests activities for you and your child to try at home that relate to and support the math that your child is exploring in class.
  • Utilize the Math Words and Ideas- At the bottom of nearly every homework and daily practice page, there is a note which indicates the purpose of the assignment and provides a title for a Math Words and Ideas (MWI) that is designed to support your child with the concept he/she is exploring.

What do I do if my child struggles with the homework?

If it seems like your child simply needs a refresher on the material or a bit more guidance to get started, use the Math Words and Ideas (MWI) that is suggested at the bottom of the homework page. If your child seems very confused or frustrated and has truly given it real effort, please STOP your child and send a note to school indicating that he/she needs help with the homework concept. Homework and daily practice will always be either directly related to the math from that day’s lesson or a review of a concept in a previous unit. There will never be new learning in the homework or daily practice. It is not productive for your child to be upset and frustrated while trying to complete homework. If he/she cannot complete the homework independently, it is an indication that he/she needs attention and guidance from the teacher.
