Curriculum in Room 33 -

Literacy:

Lucia Mar Unified School District and our International Baccalaureate Program have a Balanced Literacy Program.

Reading: Our reading program includes the following components: Guided Reading, Shared Reading, Read Aloud, and Independent Reading.

Writing: Students will write and publish their own stories during Writer’s Workshop. We will write personal narratives, nonfiction, poetry, and fiction. 

Word Study/Spelling: Your child will get a new list of spelling words each week. The words will help students practice the spelling rules we are learning in class.

Math: Our  math program is  called Investigations.The focus of instruction is on mathematical thinking and reasoning. Students develop an understanding of: number, operations, and early algebraic ideas, geometry and measurement, data analysis and probability, patterns, functions, and the math of change, which provide foundations for algebra.

IB Units:

Our I.B. school aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Our units of study include: Who We Are, Where We Are In Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet.

Embedded in our IB Units:

Social Studies: Our Social Studies program offers students an opportunity to learn about communities, with an emphasis on citizenship, geography, governmental institutions, and a basic understanding of economic reasoning skills.

Science: We will be exploring some exciting topics, including how the motion of objects can be observed and measured.  We will also be discussing how the earth is made of materials that have distinct properties and provide resources for all living things.  We will also explore the scientific process.
